A start-up that modifies generic drugs has further studies behind it and, ahead of it, a financing round meant to lead it to a pharmaceutical partner. The Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW) is emerging on the horizon.

There has been a recent wave of optimism among biotechs listed on the GPW: Ryvu has a chance at over PLN 100 million in public support, and Celon Pharma has found an experienced U.S. partner for a potential depression drug.

Plenty is happening in the domestic biotech sector beyond the exchange as well. BioResearch Pharma, working on dermatological therapies, is in the middle of an initial public offering (IPO) ahead of a NewConnect listing. A similar plan is held by Auxilius Pharma, active in cardiology, which has completed another study and is in the middle of its next financing round — one intended to bring it closer to a deal with an industry partner.

Polish biotech companies primarily look for new, innovative drugs. Auxilius, however, works on so-called supergenerics: in simple terms, it aims to improve marketed pharmaceuticals with an off-patent active substance and register them where no one currently sells them. This comes with lower risk and cost, but also a smaller potential return on investment.
